Africa In Motion (AIM) leads pioneering initiative to bring Iron Powder Energy Storage to Ethiopia
AIM, together with leading Ethiopian and Dutch partners, is proud to announce the launch of a groundbreaking international collaboration: Blue, Sustainable Energy in Ethiopia. This ambitious initiative will explore the deployment of iron powder energy storage technology — an innovative, circular, and climate-friendly solution that could revolutionize Ethiopia’s approach to sustainable and decentralized energy access.
The project brings together a unique partnership between:
- Africa In Motion (AIM) – Project Initiator & Facilitator
- Ministry of Water and Energy, Ethiopia – Governmental Partner
- Metalot – Technical Lead, Iron Powder Expertise
- Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) – Academic Research Partner
- Ethiopian Economics Association (EEA) – Policy & Research Partner
- Addis Ababa University (AAU) – Academic Exchange Partner
- Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ethiopia & The Netherlands – Diplomatic Partners
A New Approach to Energy Storage
While Ethiopia’s hydropower capacity is among the largest in Africa, challenges remain in distributing power to rural and industrial areas. Long-distance grid expansion is both costly and complex. Iron powder energy storage offers a highly flexible solution by safely storing renewable energy in iron powder, which can be transported and reused with zero CO₂ emissions. This innovative technology, validated in The Netherlands, enables the creation of decentralized energy hubs that operate independently from the national grid.
A Model for International Collaboration
“With this project, we are not just introducing new technology — we are building bridges between Africa and Europe, between innovation and implementation, and ultimately between energy potential and energy access for millions of people.”
Max Koffi, Director of Africa In Motion.
